“You’ll find out soon, darling.” Remus ruffled his son’s hair – Auror red today, the way it always was after a visit with his mum – and started walking today town. “There’s an old…friend of mine here that we need to talk to.”

“Oh.” Teddy’s hair darkened to burgundy as they approached neatly kept stone cottage. “Company manners?”

“We’ll see,” murmured Remus. He hesitated, then opened the gleaming white gate. “Severus? Is that you?”

A tall, somewhat gaunt man looked up from the garden. “Lupin?”

“Teddy?” Remus sat down beside his son. Teddy had been droopy all day, with none of his usual energy. Worse, his hair had been its natural color, not its usual vivid blue. “Did something happen at school today?”

“Nah.” The boy did not resist as Remus wrapped an arm about his shoulder. “School was all right.”

“Then why the long face, love? You can tell me.”

Teddy made a little whimpering sound and buried his face against his father’s chest. “He doesn’t want me! I can’t be his sidekick!”

“Sidekick?” Remus frowned. “Teddy? Who are - ”

“The Black Shadow!”

"Who's asking?"

He walked away. Found that the line between the wizarding and Muggle worlds was worn thin in spots.

"My name's Martin Brown. Look, this is going to sound ridiculous, but I think...I think my house might be haunted."

Ghosts. Vampires. The occasional portal to Hell. It'd be "jack-of-all-trades" back home. Here, he prefers "paranormal investigator."

"All right," he says, shrugging on his trenchcoat and lighting a fag. "Let's see what we've got."

“So – it’s really him?” Remus stared at the new issue of The Black Shadow. Dora had done her usual excellent job of sussing out the identity of the author, even if she refused to tell him where Snape currently lived. “You’re certain?”

“I saw him myself,” said Dora. She was happier with Charlie than she’d ever been with Remus, so why hadn’t they married? “Wears a scarf round his neck to cover the scars, but otherwise he’s exactly the same. Does medical compounding under an assumed name, too.”

“Good heavens.” Remus looked up. “I owe you.”

Dora grinned. “No problem.”
