The Black Shadow moved through the crowd, unseen and unnoticed. He had done his job, and if the Extract of Lethe he had sprayed over Lord Mortality’s body caused the public to think that the Ceramacist had killed the Dark One, so be it. He neither sought nor wished credit, only the knowledge that his homeland was safe.

He was nearly a mile away when he finally dropped the spell that concealed his identity. How good it was to breathe the air of freedom!

“Someday they will need me again, and I will be there,” he murmured. “But not today.”

“Point taken,” murmured Remus. He smiled faintly and turned his teacup over in his hands. “So. Why the Black Shadow? Writing a popular comic isn’t exactly a way to stay out of the public eye.”

Severus pursed his lips. “I never expected it to become the toast of the primary set. Too dark, I thought. It seems I was wrong.”

“They’re quite entertaining, if the issues I’ve read are any guide,” said Remus. He sampled the biscuits, which were surprisingly good. “I’ll take that potion if you insist, but Teddy – “

“No need unless you plan to tell Potter.”

“You do realize that I should lace your tea with Tincture of Lethe.” Severus spoke without heat as he poured. “I value my privacy, not that this seems to matter to you or your charming wife – “

“Former wife,” said Remus. Teddy had been placated by an advance reading copy of the first year of collected Black Shadow comics, and was now happily ensconced on the porch with the ARC and a plate of biscuits. “I apologize for disturbing you, but my son’s welfare comes first.”

Snape scowled. “His overly sensitive soul is not my responsibility. My personal privacy, however, is.”

Challenge #435: "Snape and the River Lethe"

(Remember: drabble posts now appear on livejournal and insanejournal and dreamwidth.

Also, remember that if you're an artist who would like to offer a drawble instead of a drabble, feel free
)

--->APOLOGIES FOR HAVING FORGOTTEN ENTIRELY ABOUT A CHALLENGE LAST WEEK!

Challenge #435: "Snape and the River Lethe" Because I clearly drank from the waters of the Lethe last week, this week's challenge is to write a drabble that draws in some way on the legends surrounding the Lethe, one of the five rivers of the Underworld in Classical Greek mythology. Those who drink from the Lethe are thought to experience complete forgetfulness, and while you needn't pay attention to the word "complete," surely there are one or two things Severus might want to forget - or a few things that he might want others to forget.

“Daddy?” Teddy looked up at his father as they disapparated onto a cliff near Padstow. “Where are we?”

“You’ll find out soon, darling.” Remus ruffled his son’s hair – Auror red today, the way it always was after a visit with his mum – and started walking today town. “There’s an old…friend of mine here that we need to talk to.”

“Oh.” Teddy’s hair darkened to burgundy as they approached neatly kept stone cottage. “Company manners?”

“We’ll see,” murmured Remus. He hesitated, then opened the gleaming white gate. “Severus? Is that you?”

A tall, somewhat gaunt man looked up from the garden. “Lupin?”

Excerpt from letter to RJ Lupin, delivered by a black barn ow.

Lupin:

Thank you ever so much for violating my hard-earned privacy. Tell me, was it your former wife who tracked me down, or did you follow your nose by the light of the moon?

As for your son’s distress at not being allowed to be my “sidekick,” kindly explain why I am supposed to incorporate a child of tender years into a fictionalized account of the Dark Lord’s reign of terror over Britain, and how my publisher’s response is somehow abusive toward the fruit of your loins….

Letter to “The Black Shadow,” care of Obscurus Press. The letter is charmed to be opened only by the writer of the Black Shadow comic books.

Dear Severus –

Yes, I know it’s you, and no, I won’t tell you how I learned that you’re alive and well and writing comic books that broke my little boy’s - living in Cornwall. However, you should know that my son is a great fan of yours the Black Shadow’s and cried himself to sleep after someone from your publisher told him he couldn’t be your “sidekick.”

Think on that, Severus.

“Teddy?” Remus sat down beside his son. Teddy had been droopy all day, with none of his usual energy. Worse, his hair had been its natural color, not its usual vivid blue. “Did something happen at school today?”

“Nah.” The boy did not resist as Remus wrapped an arm about his shoulder. “School was all right.”

“Then why the long face, love? You can tell me.”

Teddy made a little whimpering sound and buried his face against his father’s chest. “He doesn’t want me! I can’t be his sidekick!”

“Sidekick?” Remus frowned. “Teddy? Who are - ”

“The Black Shadow!”
